Pistol Skills: Out Of The Comfort Zone
Richard Verdi – Holmdel Township Police Department

Course Description:  Too many times officers will not try new courses because they are in their own “comfort zone.” This is where they can shoot and hit what they are shooting at. They do not push themselves by decreasing the time to  shoot or try new courses. This class will help break out of that comfort zone and increase a shooters ability to shoot fast  and accurately.

Instructors: Sgt. Richard Verdi is a 17 year police veteran and serves as a Patrol Supervisor Rangemaster for his agency. He has been a member of IALEFI® since 1989 instructing at two ATCs and numerous RTCs and is currently serving as a member of the IALEFI® Board of Directors. He is a NJ state certified Rangemaster and a member of the NJ Attorney General's Firearms Advisory Board. He is also a published author, with approximately two dozen articles published in the popular gun press.

Student requirements:  Duty pistol, duty carry rig, minimum of 3 magazines or speed loaders, 300 rounds of ammunition.Patrol Carbine

He was on the Tactical Team for 10 years as the Sergeant, and he is currently the in-service programs training sergeant. Concealed Carry for the Plainclothes and Off-Duty Officer
Sgt. Len Simicich  –  Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department
Course description: The typical officer spends about 40 hours a week in uniform. The rest of the time, he is off-duty. This block of instruction will focus on the various weapon and holster combinations used in the off duty and plainclothes environment. Upon completion of this block of instruction, student will have a better knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of the various weapons and support gear typically carried by off-duty and plainclothes officers. Students will also be able to access their weapons and fire decisive shots on targets in a short time frame from a concealed carry holster.

Instructor: Len Simicich is a sergeant with the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department in Northern New Jersey. In addition to being a firearms instructor and armorer, his is also a baton and OC instructor and a Field Training Officer. A live member of the NRA, Len is also a member of IALEFI, ASLET, the Police Firearms Instructor’s Association of Bergen County (NJ) and the New Jersey Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association.

Student requirements: Handgun, concealment holster, spare magazines or speed loaders, with concealment carriers, and a concealing garment, 300 rounds of full power ammunition. Body armor is recommended. All live fire exercises will be shot from concealment.

Practical Shotgun for the Patrol Officer
Capt. Mike Boyle – New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife
Course Descriptions: Despite it’s tremendous utility value, the police shotgun remains an underutilized and misunderstood tool. Many of the negative attitudes relative to the shotgun stem from improper training and as a result, officers never develop confidence in this particular weapon system. This 4 hour block of instruction will focus on the use of the shotgun as a fighting tool, with particular emphasis on reduced light operation. The shotgun enjoys greater hit potential than with the service handgun, however this will only be realized with proper training.

Instructor: Capt. Mike Boyle is the Training Administrator for his department as well as a staff instructor and Range Master at the Division of Criminal Justice Academy. He also serves on the IALEFI® Board of Directors where he chairs the Regional Training Committee. Mike contributed the chapter on Police Shotgun to the book “Total Survival”.

Student requirements: duty shotgun, 50 rounds 00 Buck, 5 Slugs, duty belt and equipment, handgun with speed loaders or magazines, and 20 rounds of ammunition.
